2019 – Rev. Dr. J Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the PC(USA), speaks from a graveyard in Southern Texas where the bodies of unidentified migrants who have died trying to make their way into the United States are buried. The Stated Clerk reflects on his visit to the border crossing south of McAllen, Texas amid the intense restrictions of migration flow that have recently gone into effect. This border has essentially closed all flow from between Hidalgo, Texas, USA and Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico for immigrants seeking asylum and visa holders alike. Policies such as these force immigrants into even more remote and dangerous areas of the desert and wilderness in their desperate search for safety and a better life.
There is no medical examiner in Brooks County, Texas. The practice before 2013 was to bury unidentified migrants found in this corridor in mass graves. More than 200 people have been exhumed since 2013 in an attempt to identify their remains and notify family members.
